 Discover Art :

Barbara Hepworth made an ovel Sculpture in 1943. it is carved from plane wood with interior painted white.which was the part of Pier Arts Centre's Permanent collection since the gallery first opened in stromness in 1979

Margaret Gardiner, was the founder of arts center was a great friend of Hepworth, Ben Nicholson with many other artists working in Cornwall that time She saw this piece in a London art gallery in 1946 and tells the story (in a publication that marked the launch of the Pier Arts Centre) about how she came to purchase it.

In 1946 At the Reid and Lefevre Gallery show She said I stood for a long time looking at Barbara Hepworth’s carving, Oval Form. Opposite me, and looking at it with seemingly equal delight, was a man, a stranger.

‘If I could afford it, I’d buy that sculpture’ I said.

‘If I could afford it, I’d buy that sculpture’ he said.

On a sudden impulse, ‘Then why don’t we share it?’ I asked.

‘Why not, he said.

And so it was agreed. I discovered that his name was CS Reddihough, and he lived in Yorkshire and was a friend of Ben Nicholson’s and he was also a great admirer of both Ben’s and Barbara’s work.

We shared Oval Form for many years. Reddihough would drive down to London and collect it and then, about six months later, he would bring it back to me. It was always with great delight that I would see it again.

In the end Reddihough asked me to buy him out as he wished to get a painting of Ben’s that he couldn’t otherwise afford. I agreed, and so I acquired my ‘second half’ of the work.

I still have the invoice from the gallery which runs like this:

‘One carving by Barbara Hepworth in plane wood. “Oval Sculpture” 1944.

Your half-share …’

Which must, surely, be something of a rarity?

Contemporary artist Christine Borland has a longstanding fascination with Oval Sculpture, and in 2012 created a work – Oval Interior – that explores the interior spaces of Hepworth’s carving. Using 3D digital scanning technology the hollowed-out spaces were recreated as solid forms, revealing the appearance of space “hidden” within the sculpture

Art is Realistic

 Plaster of Paris

Plaster of paris is economical art material and develops interest while working.I is versatile medium and used in different types of modelling and art. it is used in making masks, chalks and more craft projects. Plaster of paris is best for the use of moulds and most good choice for relief-carving projects.however, one of its most useful functions is for making statues. It is easy to work and hard when dried and it works like cement. we
can make plaser of paris very easily at home. Plaser of Paris is avaiable in powder form in which water can be mixed in a speciic quantity to make a thick gooey liquid. Mix some colour if requied. Press/Insert a few things into the gooey liquid and give it a desired shape . You can gift your artwork to anybody on asuitable occasion. It can be displayed in a showcase or can be utilized as a stylish _a-er weight. You can paint it, if you want a coloured sculpture.

How to prepare Plaster of paris To Prepare the plaster fill a cntainer or small plstic bucket in the ratio of one part (water) into the two part (plaster of paris) Now mix the plaster of paris into water with your fingers properly. This might take .a little time.Stir the mixture properly and pick out any lumps that may be formed as soon as the plaster is mixed to smmoth creamy consistancy tap the bottom of the container on the flat surface to release any trapped air.The plaster is ready to be used. If you want to make a block or a slab pour it into a desired sized carton box.The plaster will harden in just a few minutes..when the block is dry.peel the carton box and the slab is ready..

To Paint ,paint with acrylic paint or poster paint.Dont mix more water or it may weaken the Plaster of paris. Solid colours are easy to paint and can provide very mordern glimps to our artwork. Use clear acrylic sealer on artwork which will protect the artwork from moisture and give a glossy look after it is painted and dried.
